IMPRES firmware update above 3.9/3.11?

Post by motorola_otaku » Thu Oct 26, 2017 8:11 pm

Supposedly there is a firmware update past 3.11 that will allow for, among other things, charging of batteries while the radio is turned on without damaging the battery. I searched MOL and came up with nothing, but my application for MTN emails is also off in la-la land somewhere so idk if anything has been distributed through that channel.

APX specifically, but I figured it would be applicable to TRBO and XTS as well.

Agreed. I thought they were all the same.

I checked and yes they are the same. I have to plead lack of experience on the chargers. Moto must be using the same battery types and general configurations in the assembly. A nice change from how this type of thing is usually done.

The latest firmware versions are as follows: Charger V3.11 / Display V1.7 / Prgrm V1.1

The fix you reference was made in V3.9:
What’s the difference between V3.4 and V3.9?
Very Little: APX batteries are fully compatible with XTS chargers (w/inserts) with SW V3.4, therefore upgrading to V3.9 is not required. However, APX radio users leaving the radio in the “on” position will experience longer charging times. V3.9 has added SW to handle this situation if it happens occasionally. Motorola always recommends turning radio “off” when charging.

Confused about version numbers? MOL released V3.4 then V3.9 then V3.11. Version 3.11 is higher than Version 3.09 since 11 is greater than 9.

That’s actually the standard way of versioning software.

Is this only applicable to desktop chargers and MUCs? Our vehicle chargers are at 3.9 (according to the label, at least... late 2013 purchase date) and if someone leaves a radio turned on in one of those it gets so hot you can barely handle it.

There is nothing in the release notes about the heat issue but I do recall that problem. However I don't remember if there was a fix. The release notes apply to single unit and MUCs. Also I don't believe you can upgrade the vehicle chargers and the release notes specifically say 'desktop chargers'. Last I looked you have to completely dismantle the vehicle chargers to get to the circuit board.

It would have been nice if Moto had access covers on all of the impress chargers..

As they say, wish in one hand.... M would rather you buy all new product rather than support what they already sold you...but you already knew that.
