Favorite VHF Wideband antenna?

Post by 256QAM » Mon Mar 13, 2017 12:28 am

Personally I've been using a mix of Maxrad MWV1365S and PCTel PCTWSLMR NMO...

I just took delivery of a Browning BR-159 on a whim, needed a cheap ($24 on Amazon) no ground plane antenna for a go kit. Surprising broadbanded, out of the box it was flat from 144 to almost 160, started climbing up at 168... Not sure if I'll end up using it or not, was just surprised how well built it was for one of the cheapo brands.

I'm a PCTEL/MAXRAD guy all day long. I mostly use a 1/4 wave and have a 5/8 that I carry around but want to try out a 1/2 wave for the fun of it.

I picked up the NGP 1/2 wave to avoid having to run radials on an NMO base conversion (hate losing the set screws in travel). We'll see how it performs when I get in to the backcountry.

I swept the PCTel BMWV1365 wideband no-tune and it was indeed less <2 VSWR from 136 to 174. Impressive.

For some reason my dummy load is flat right across the band but it does not radiate very well.

Panorama's tri-band whip. With the NMO adapter, list price is about $75. The antenna is spec'd for 146-174/430-480/764-896 MHz. Other than that, I like the Motorola/AS heavy duty 1/4 wave whip with spring (non-/\/\ PN: MWV1365S). Of course, Motorola runs the AS base on their version usually.

I knew Panorama had a "covert" tri-band but didn't know the specs were that good... only one I found does 150-160, 450-512, and 7/800.
