EFJ Challanger 7152 Program Software

Postby ASRM » Fri Jul 21, 2017 2:55 pm

I am not asking for software, but wondering what software I use to program a Jonson Challenger 7152

The 7152 is a VHF unit. I have the software for the 7172 which is the UHF radio.

I went thru all my EFJ software and only see 71/72 series RSS/Software.

Am I wrong in thinking that I could use the 7172 software on the 7152? Or is Johnson that particular? The EFJ dealer that came in the other day thought yu could, but he stated it has been ages ago and he could be wrong.

I am able to pull the buffer (codeplug) out of the UHF radio, but get no love on the VHF rig.

Guy sent us his VHF radio since he saw we have used and new in the box 7172's (don't ask...) to program for him.

No good deed goes unpunished it seems.

EJF is like most manufacturers in that software for one model will program all the bands. You should be good to go.

Well I tried that since the 7152 and 7172 are the same model, just one if VHF and one is UHF.

I can pull the codeplug (the call it a buffer file) down for the and view it and make adjustments, but the 7152 radio just does nothing. Once you hit the space bar after you cycle the radio on and off, it has a line saying radio data or something like that (I am not near it right now) as were the properly working unit starts displaying a crap load of ???????0000000####000000??????? and that stops. You then return to the main menu and select "Edit Buffer File" and off you go.

I wonder if it's possible there is an issue with the data port (Though the radio seems to recognize the RIB) they use or the codeplug is whacked out.

I did see a difference on the display, the 7172 has a 2 digit LED, and the right LED displays "P" while the 7152 displays both LED's with "Pr".

I confirmed what I think is it means program mode since if I pull the program cable out, it reverts to channel 1 and squelches. We have the proper cable (OEM from Johnson) and the original disk. It runs in DOS mode.

So I am at an impasse at the moment. Online information is pretty light. Grrrrrrrr.
