Re: Favorite VHF Wideband antenna?

Panorama's tri-band whip. With the NMO adapter, list price is about $75. The antenna is spec'd for 146-174/430-480/764-896 MHz. Other than that, I like the Motorola/AS heavy duty 1/4 wave whip with spring (non-/\/\ PN: MWV1365S). Of course, Motorola runs the AS base on their version usually. I knew...

Re: Motorola APX Firmware 18 and above moving forward

Lets hope that Motorola makes it easy to get the EIDs without having to have MOL or an account. I have a feeling they'll go with the standard jump-around for EIDs like they did for the TRBO line. My thing is I hope that we can buy EIDs without much drama... like the AES EID for TRBO. Something tell...

Re: Motorola APX Firmware 18 and above moving forward

I am glad it is happening. Of all features it seems hams want to hack with Depot, it is the Q52 Federal FPP that is mentioned most in these debates. Except with the new EID structure it means someone authorized to buy the EID can buy them in bulk and resell. True - not quite "Motorola Approved", but...

Re: Astro Saber

I have 3 512k models I might have to send to someone to get upgraded since they are just as old as OP's radio. Glad to see the CVN is still readily available though.

Re: P25 Techs from a Different View

I have always wanted to have a similar sit-down with various LMR techs/engineers from the different manufacturers to discuss the realistic pros/cons of each brand's products. I have always known a Quantar has a HOT receiver compared to a MASTR, and most of the ham/CERT/private second-hand owners kno...

Re: 12 dB SINAD vs 5% BER

I have always liked digital modes for exactly what you illustrated. With permission, I might include these clips and test data in my next presentation to a CERT group that is adamant against going digital for the sake of the old-timers not wanting to mess with "those new modes only cops use". It may...

Re: Odessey Control Head Discrepencies

Might be worth a shot. I have had some odd Motorola-isms that pop up every so often like this that make me scratch my head. For instance I have repaired and installed two Astro Spectra VHF 110w W9 units for a friend. Both have the same flashcode, RF deck, and head revision. One will show periods in ...

Re: P25NX and Raspberry Pi

Seems like P25NX has gone dead in the water. The project creator even admits the "Version 2" of his network has been a failure. Seems like the on-paper design was great but didn't scale into real-life usage. The other issue is with the huge rise of MMDVM it looks like P25NX has become a "walled gard...

Re: APX 8500

Semi-related... been arguing that agencies here buy 8000/8500 models for the very marginal price difference instead of 6000/6500s... no one seems to listen until a magical "hey we want to talk on VHF next door" moment comes up and I smugly say "well if you bought the radios I recommended it would ha...

Re: MASTR III - General Opinion?

For the price and your intended use with the MMDVM - I'd say go for it. They seem to be solid performers in terms of reliability - and the RF modules are easy to find (easier than Quantar parts at this point) and seemingly dirt cheap. Repeater Builder also has an easy tutorial to change VHF R2 board...

Yet... lol

I think it is the next firmware that we will be seeing the "pay to play" policy go into effect.

Re: Odessey Control Head Discrepencies

Its been a long time since I have worked on both a W and O series mobile in the same process - but I think once you create your codeplug you need to verify the codeplug is made for the correct control head. In CPS you can change control head type on the XTL series with just a menu change - sounds li...

Re: Astro Spectra question

Buy a USB-serial adapter with an FTDI chipset and nothing else - trust me there is a difference and CPS pukes even with a legitimate Prolific chip. As for the RIB, get the "Valley Enterprises" or "Kawamall" one for personal use... its $30 and works just as well as the Motorola one. FTDI chip cable: ...

You know... that is actually something I never asked. If I run into the Comms Director at my agency I am going to ask him since I know that was a recent issue they were having.

Re: CPS and Win 10.

Good to know. My programming computer only contains CPS. I often suspect that some of the win 10 issues are from other programs also installed on the computers. I’ve seen that with some software but nothing Motorola... yet. The DPI scaling has been an issue with multiple programs in my experience t...
